Dirtboards - What Dirtboard Is Best For You?

By Baxter Wells

Mountain boards come in all shapes and sizes. What size of mountain board should you get? What style? What features should it have? If you are new to the extreme sport of mountain boarding, it can be really difficult trying to figure out what board you should buy. This article's aim is to teach you about mountain boards and help you get an idea of what kind of board you should get based on your size, and the kind of riding that you will do. Just so you know, mountain boards may also be called mountainboards, dirtboards, grassboards, or off road skateboards.

Some mountain boards have weight limits. If the one you think you might get has a weight limit, make sure your weight is under it before you get it.

After considering your weight, think about how you plan on using your mountain board. Do you want to take it to a skate park, a mountain boarding park and focus mainly on tricks? Are you the kind of rider that wants to hit ramps and rails and pull of sweet tricks? If you are, you probably want a freestyle board, which are lighter and smaller.

If freestyle riding doesn't appeal to you, are you the kind of rider that wants to ride down trails, grass hills, dirt roads, or anything and everything? Do you want to carve and bomb down hills? If this sounds like you, try finding a mountain board that is made for freeriding. Boards for freeriding tend to be longer and heavier, and some have larger wheels, so that it can easily roll over rougher terrain.

Do you want to do a little bit of everything? Lots of riders want a board that can handle everything. If you fit in this group, you would do well with the average sized mountain board that is made to do it all. If it's too big it won't do well for freestyle riding, if it is too small, it won't be exceptional at freeriding. The medium sized mountain board, however, is good to have for riders wanting to do everything.

When learning about mountain boards, you'll find that there are plenty of options out there to choose from, so take your time and get one that fits your riding style and your weight, and then get riding!
