7 Important Things to Consider When Hosting Your Child's Birthday Party

By Hannah Scrivener

When you hold your childs birthday you want it to be a fun, joy-filled and magical experience for them. You want to be able to relax and watch your child have fun and have all your guests happily entertained. Here are some tips to help you achieve this.

1. Location: Choose a good location for your party. You need lots of space for children to run around. A park with play equipment makes an ideal venue for a party, mess free, hassle free and the children can pretty much entertain themselves. Other venues like play centres or community halls work well and you can use your own house but be aware of the mess and move valuable or delicate items out of the way.

2. Themes: Now that you have the location you can begin to think about themes, activities and entertainment. Possible themes to consider could include fairy, princess, mermaid, Dora the explorer, Tinkerbell and Peterpan, Pirates, prince or superheroes.

3. Decorating: Once youve chosen the theme you can decorate the party venue to create a magical underwater world, enchanted fairy land or tropical pirate island. Turn the names of the food and drinks to match the theme. For example coke becomes witches broth, marshmallows become fairy clouds or red cordial can be superhero energy potion.

4. Entertainment: If you are hiring an entertainer make sure you book a few weeks in advance to ensure availability. Send out your invitations after you have booked the entertainer and determined time and venue. Look for entertainers that have had lots of experience and really look the part of the character they are portraying. Let your child choose the character if possible by searching on the internet.

5. Timing: For younger children under 3 years old it is best to hold a morning party between 10-12pm as the little ones get tired and usually need to nap in the afternoon. An hour of entertainment is perfect if you are hiring someone and even half and hour works well with really small groups. With older children any time of day is good and longer entertainment packages are great with activities such as story telling, magic treasure hunts, craft activities and guessing games.

6. Games: There are certain games that will always be loved by children at parties. Pass the parcel, musical statues, treasure hunts, bubbles are all much loved. Ensure you have fun lively music to brighten up the atmosphere and tailor the music and games to reflect the theme. For example change musical statues to fairy freeze or pass the parcel to pass the magic treasure box, with special treats inside.

7. Enjoy The Day: Finally always remember to enjoy the day. No matter how much you prepare, things can always go wrong. Bad weather, unexpected guests or poor catering companies are all out of your control. But ultimately it is your time to enjoy your child and celebrate their life, so make sure you take lots of pictures and never forget it as a fun filled celebration of life!
