The Background of Airsoft

By Teri Eldritch

The sport of airsoft was originally created in Japan, as were the original airsoft rifles/guns. One of the mains reasons for this is because in Japan, guns (especially pistols) are illegal to even own for almost everyone; and even shotguns are near impossible to own in many cases.

Because it was near impossible to even hold or own a real gun in Japan, exact, non-lethal replicas of these guns were made, which later became known of airsoft guns. These airsoft guns started to come in many shapes and forms, such as airsoft pistols, automatic electric airsoft rifles, and even airsoft sniper rifles.

This gave the people of Japan the option of owning a gun that looked and felt like the real thing, but was only capable of shooting plastic airsoft BBs. Even though these replicas will never be capable of firing live rounds, or even shooting small metal or lead projectiles (like bb/pellet guns do), they are probably the closest thing to a real gun that almost anyone in Japan is every going to get their hands on.

Shortly after airsoft rifles came about in Japan, the actual sport of airsoft began, which quickly became very popular in other countries, such as Europe, Great Britain, and then the United States, among other places.

Now airsoft is played by people of all sexes and age groups, and there are many different types of games. The types of airsoft games played range anywhere from small skirmishes, to full blown tactical group battles. Sometimes airsoft guns are even used for historical re-enactments as well.

Also, airsoft guns, especially the electric airsoft rifles, are used for real military and police training purposes. Many of the common airsoft rifles used for these purposes are the airsoft M4 rifle, the airsoft AK 47 airsoft gun, 9mm airsoft pistols, and even airsoft sniper rifles.

As far as the tactical gear used for airsoft goes, there are many, many options available in this day and age. Many peoples invest is protective gear and clothing, such as airsoft masks, vests, camo clothing and boots, and much more. There are far too many items to list as far as that goes.

Airsoft is an easy sport to learn, and can be played by virtually anyone, of practically any age group. Also, the cost of playing airsoft is generally much lower than other comparable sports, such as paintball. This is mainly due to how much cheaper the plastic airsoft BBs are than paintballs, among other things.
