How to Swap and Get Free Paperbacks

By Sara Gilmore

There are lots of pluses to trading paperbacks. You can basically recycle your books and make more space in your house. You'll be able to find literary works that you might not have bought otherwise because you'll be able to get more bang for your book. There are some tricks to making the most of your paperback trading experience.

Specify exactly what you are looking for. Sure, most of the books you get will be in pretty good condition simply because they have to meet the site's regulations. You can even set up alerts to be sent to other members before a trade is initiated so you don't receive smoke or fur filled books that will make you sneeze. If you want to keep the books a long time then you'll can specify that you only want books that look like they are new although other members may refuse to trade to you.

Be honest about what you have. You'll want to carefully enter the ISBN on the back of the book instead of just trying to list the name of the book since each site may have dozen versions of each book. Many sites won't trade books that have any water damage. Inspect the book first hand to make sure it's in good shape instead of just adding in items that you think you have.

Explore the variety of books available to you. You can choose between paperback, audio and even hardback and you'll also have a choice of different editions. You might find that it costs more to ship out hardcover books.

Make the most of your swapping budget. Different swapping sites will place the value of a book in different ways. You'll need to be first in line at most companies to get a really popular book or anything that is new to the best seller's list. Do your research to be the first in line when a new book you want comes out. Stay on top of your emails so you don't miss out on potential swaps.

When you do free paperback trading you'll probably qualify for Media Mail. Media Mail means that you'll spend less money but your book will also take longer to get there. Make sure that you have several weeks where you can still stay in the guidelines of the site if you are going with this shipping method.
